The word dhikr is commonly translated as “remembrance” or “invocation”. In reality, it can take on a number of different meanings which the present article thoroughly explores. Amongst the issues discussed, various categories of dhikr have been outlined, particularly as related to theoretical vs. practical intellects. Increasingly more elevated stages of remembering God have been described, and also discussed when one is instead remembered by God. It has also been explained how a thing or person may be the very embodiment and personification of dhikr of God and also a reminder of God, while at the same time, it is notable in itself and results in others to also become distinguished. Particular emphasis has been made on the Divine Books and the Perfect Human.
